Defense on the Road

All of us in the family are sport-minded. We either go biking, jogging, hiking, swimming or playing tennis. We want to be fit and active all the time. Because we want to be active and fit all the time, we make sure that these activities are safe and sound, particularly biking or jogging on the road. When my son was little, it was one of the family’s favorite things to do – ride bikes around the neighborhood, even into the night. Though this wasn’t that long ago, we didn’t have any protective gear. We merely sat on our bikes and rode off! However, things nowadays are different.

I hate to say it, but it is dangerous out there – cars whizzing by at break neck speed, and not being watchful enough. When in a car, practice defensive driving, that goes for biking and jogging as well. Even though I prefer doing these activities on the hills and alleyways, there are risks still. So to minimize the possibility of an injury, I insist that all family members wear a helmet, and a reflective vest, especially if the activity is at dawn, dusk or evening. For the most part, we are not on the roads at nights.

There are additional ways you can be safe on the road. Evidently the point is to avoid getting involved in road accidents. You want to be as visible as possible, so adding a headlight to your bike will help. Helmet lights too are important since you can gaze at the driver to make certain he sees you. There are a lot of countries that require bikes to install bells, so putting a horn is a nice plan. If you have to take off, slow down so that the incoming car won’t hit you. Watch out for drivers getting out of parked cars, don’t ride on sidewalks, against the traffic, stop behind a car at a stop sign or light instead of beside it – this makes sure you are seen by other drivers, use your mirror before turning, never ever move without looking behind you first, don’t weave in and out of traffic or parking lots and never make a turn without using a signal. Make sure that your headlight and taillight are on whenever you ride at night. Use a vest that reflects lights. Choose streets that are spacious, streets with slow traffic and side streets on weekends. Follow traffic regulations, always put your protective gear on and make sure the equipment is functioning properly, then you will be less likely to get into accidents.

Several safety measures for biking are similar for jogging. Put on a suit with reflectors, avoid using your headphones (for biking too), and be watchful of your surroundings. When you ride your bike or jog on the streets, you are also prone to respiratory problems because of the air pollution from cars. You can breathe in plenty of carbon monoxide in just a short time including dust and fragments. However, it is rarely the only choice people have.

Hence the best safety option is be on the defensive side always. The best way to keep yourself visible from other motorists is to wear an orange or yellow reflective suit that can provide safe visibility.

Accidents could occur at any time with out any warning. Make certain of your safety by getting a cycling safety vest from Safe Home. There, you will be able to pick a cycling safety vest that can keep you secure whilst on the street.

Beechworth Real Estate Sells Well

Beechworth is a popular tourist destination in the picturesque northeast region of Victoria, Australia. It remains one of the best preserved historical towns in the country with many fine colonial buildings. The town was a key supply centre in the Victorian goldfields during the 1850s gold boom. Because of its rich history, large flow of visitors, attractive natural setting, Beechworth real estate is an asset highly prized by many people.

There are 17 wineries in the region including Brown Brothers Vineyard, one of the oldest in the nation with vintages dating back to 1889. It is located on the outskirts of Milawa, about 30 kilometres to the southwest of Beechworth. The region tends to specialize in robust reds, including muscat and fortified port. These wines compliment the fantastic cheeses, mustards and bakeries products produced in the region.

The town has produced a number of notable figures, including Sir Isaac Alfred Isaacs (1855-1948). Although Isaacs was born in Melbourne, his family moved to the small town of Yackandandah in 1859 and then to the larger neighbouring Beechworth in 1867. Isaacs attended the Common school and then to Beechworth Grammar School of which he was dux. He eventually carved out a career as barrister, politician, Victorian state and federal attorney-general and high court judge. He was a prominent federationist, having served as a Victorian delegate to the Federal convention. He was also the first Australian-born governor-general to serve the country.

The town is served by a number of high quality restaurants and cafes including Wardens Food and Wine; Gigis and Bank, both in Ford Street; and the Green Shed Bistro and Beechworth Bakery, both in Camp Street.

Some of the town restaurants have developed a national reputation, many visitors seeking them out specifically by name. Perhaps the best known in this category is the Beechworth Bakery. It proudly claims to be the greatest bakery in Australia. This bread and pastry maker is licensed to serve alcohol which, by itself, indicates it is not your average bakery. It is a multiple award-winning family business that was an early catalyst driving Beechworth as a significant tourist destination.

The building that houses the Beechworth Bakery was built in 1857, making it one of the oldest in town. The second storey and balcony were added around 1900. Over the years, it has been used as a shoe shop, dining room and pastry shop. It was purchased by the Beechworth Bakery in 1984, along with the adjacent. Twenty six years and much work later, including a couple of false starts, the business generates an annual turnover in excess of $12 million, serving over one million customers, and is one of the largest retailers of its type in Australian history. The owner, Tom OToole, has established similar bakeries in five other rural Australian towns – Echuca, Albury, Healesville, Bendigo and Ballarat.

Beechworth is a superb base from which to launch a campaign of day expeditions to enjoy surrounding highlights/into the surrounding countryside. One popular route is to drive or bicycle to Stanley to explore its apple, berry and nut orchards and then move on to visit historic Yackandandah.

A second trip is to drive east to tiny village of Dederang that guards the entrance to the glorious Keiwa Valley and then on to Mount Beauty at the base of the Australian Alps. Lunch might be enjoyed at Mount Beauty or a few kilometers to the west at Bright on the lazy Oven River. The return journey can be routed through Gapsted so as to provide an opportunity of a wine tasting at Gapsted Winery.

Over the years, Beechworth has had to reinvent itself moving from a frenzied gold town to the more sedately paced agricultural centre. Today, tourism is a key activity. The one constant during its life is that Beechworth real estate has been consistently viewed as among the most desirable in the region.

Jasmine Zahara is a respected novelist with a place of work in Beechworth and is enthusiastic on this part of Australia. Jasmine blogs on many provincial Victorian things and acknowledges Beechworth as just one of the most engaging country Australia spots.

The Pros and Cons of Distance Learning

Distance education is one of the famous types of educational learning nowadays. This may be rooted to the vast improvement in the field of modern technologies. Others define distance learning as a process that provides and creates access to learning even though the learners and the information are separated by distance and time. When you enter this kind of study, it is vital to learn the pros as well as the cons of the program.

First is that it is said to be convenient since you can take the course by the time you need it. This is not similar to those college courses that have a fix schedule. Anytime you wanted to undergo with it, then you can. Second is flexibility. With distance learning, you have the power to decide with regards to the pace of your programs. Third is the cost. With regards to financial aspect, it is said that distance learning is cheaper. Besides, you do not have to worry about the transportation allowance that you may use. Moreover, your budget on your meals is also not a problem.

It is said that benefit and risk goes hand and hand. The following are the disadvantages of the said type of learning.

There will be no instructor face time. This can be considered as one of the disadvantages because every student differs in terms of learning. Some prefer to see their instructors in person and some don’t, some learns faster using audio and some prefer visual aids. Requires new skills and technologies is another disadvantage of this program. If you found difficulty learning to operate computers as well as the web, this will seem to be a downfall. Another con is that no campus atmosphere is present. The campus scenario is not available in this program.

The above mentioned details are just some of the pros and cons of distance learning. You just have to take note of them in order to succeed in such kind of learning system.

Furthermore, it is a must to choose the proper program suited for you. This may avoid you from wasting the time, money as well as effort that you will invest when you enter a distance learning course. Of course the determination to learn is the best trait that you must have. If you have the will, those pros and cons will be subtle at the end.

If You Think Hamburgers Are the Food of the Gods, Then Chicago is Heaven

Chicago may have been known as the Hog Butcher to the World (really!) in the 19th century, but today it is known for wonderful food of all kinds.

Chicago has climbed the food destination latter for food travelers faster in the past 10 years than any city outside of the country of Spain. While it may still trail NYC, New Orleans and San Fran in the US, it is certainly a trip worth making.

Here are 3 “Low Brow” Reasons Chicago is Foodie Heaven

1. The Hamburger at Mindy’s HotChocolate

That’s all it’s called, “Hamburger.” No fancy-pants name for this killer up-scale burger served at one of the best pastry shops in the Windy City.

Mindy starts with about 7 ounces of Heartland Farms beef (ground at the restaurant everyday) and adds aged Cheddar Cheese and crisp Bacon. So simple – but, oh so good.

Even the bun deserves a mention here (what would you expect from one of the best pastry chefs but perfection?) It is a house-made garlic dream.

And where else can you finish your lunch off with world-class pastries? Highly recommended.

Mindy’s HotChocolate is at 1747 N. Damen Ave and the Hamburger is $13

40-Day-Aged Prime Burger at David Burke’s Primehouse

Supposedly, David ages his beef in a room of Himalayan salt tiles. Not sure if this is true but I have no reason to doubt him. Especially when the burger is this good.

He takes 10 ounces of his aged beef and puts in inside a potato bun with garlic spinach (!), bacon mayo and roasted shallots.

It’s sounds crazy, but it works.

David Burke’s Primehouse is located inside The James at 616 Rush St. and the Burger is a very reasonable $12

3. Cortland Street Burger at Cortland’s Garage

Don’t worry if you have never heard of this place – even if you are from Chicago. It’s a little bar off a side-street near Wicker Park just off of the Kennedy.

But with burgers this good, I don’t think it will stay unknown for very long.

Chef Jim August takes pure Angus Beef and adds applewood-smoked bacon, fried onion strings, fresh avocado and white cheddar cheese to make a burger that is weird and familiar all in the same bite. Every last bite.

Head up north tonight and see what I mean.

Cortland’s Garage is at 1645 W. Cortland St. and the Cortland Street Burger is $11
