Former Alabama Player Terrence Cody Left His Mark On College Football
One of the largest men in college sports this past year, Terrence Cody, at 6 foot 4 in. tall & 350 lbs, has altered the way that colleges evaluate bigger players. A wonderful run stopper can make a world of difference for football clubs wishing to free up their linebackers.
I do believe that increasingly more we will have large men, obviously like Terrence Cody, arriving onto the scene in college football. A large fella at that size at the center of the defense playing nosetackle or middle guard is an extremely invaluable resource.
Now don’t misunderstand me, individuals the size of Terrence Cody with his quickness don’t come around all the time. The NFL football team, the Baltimore Ravens discovered superb potential in this big man’s natural skills, size, and quickness enough to draft him at number 57 in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft.
It’s not only size which makes the big difference in a fellow like this,it is also the quickness. The fast 1st step off the line, when combined with the mutliplying power of the weight, it is pure physics of mass times acceleration equals momentum… and momentum he does have!
The Baltimore Ravens discovered a sizeable drop-off in it’s run defense for the first time this past year, 2009. Running back Cedric Benson of the Cincinnati Bengals rushed for the 100 yard game versus the heralded Ravens defense in over 39 games. Part of the reason is the light middle of the defensive front. In 2010,the coaches of the Ravens knew that they needed the big man up the middle of their defense to totally free things up and so they drafted big “Mount Cody”.
Look for big things (no pun intended) out of Mount Cody in the NFL, in addition to some other massive guys doing much more in college football. Recruiting will heat up for these types of players because it proved successful for the Alabama Crimson Tide in collecting a 2009 national championship.
So the very next time you think of excellent defense, see if you can find a nearby mountain and take a look at it. Your most beloved college football team will probably be looking for the same thing but only a bit more human!
