Fishing from Small Boats Can Get You Closer to the Fish

When there is a fishing scene in a movie or on television, the fishermen are usually on some big boat. It will have all sorts of bells and whistles on it that make you green with envy. But many people find that fishing from small boats is even more enjoyable. Especially because, depending on the area, you may be able to catch more with the smaller boat.

One of the biggest pluses with a small boat is its ease in portability. Some are small enough to transport on top of an SUV or in the back of a pickup truck. They may even be light enough for one person to put on and off by themselves. A boat this size is also nice because you can maneuver more easily without a boat trailer. With the boat on the truck, you can drive into places you might not have been able to access otherwise.

Mobility is also a factor once you reach the water with your small boat. It is not only easier to get in and out of the water. It is also easier to get into spots you could not go with a larger boat. Areas that are shallow or clogged with plants are great spots for fishing but impossible with a large boat. Do not be surprised if you are able to catch fish at times when the fishermen on the bigger fancier boats go home empty handed.

One of the main reasons many people look at small boats is the lower price over the larger type of boat. It is not just the initial cost that is higher on a larger boat, the maintenance costs will also be greater. For example, smaller boats mean smaller engines that require less gasoline. And the larger the boat, the more effort to maintain as well.

Some people are less concerned about the price than the experience itself. A small boat just feels closer to the water and to the entire pastime. But, of course, it does all come at a lower price tag.

There are many different types of small boats available, made from various materials and at a range of prices. Common boat materials are wood, aluminum and fiberglass. And styles include flat bottoms, punts, dinghies, canoes and kayaks, just to name a few.

Some small boats will come with a motor, with others you will need to add one yourself if desired. You can make other additions as well, if it is big enough. Some of those fancy gadgets on the big boats can be taken along on your small boat. It really depends on what you want and what will fit. If you have room, you can install a fish finder or, for a smaller boat, you might want to purchase a portable unit.

You will just want to be careful when adding things to your boat to be sure you do not overload it. Also pay attention when adding motors not to exceed the recommended horsepower. Overloading with weight and power can end up in dangerous accidents.

If you love to fish and love to spend the day on the water, do not let money get in your way. Take a good look at the possibilities of fishing from small boats. When you are out there on your favorite pond or lake in your very own boat, you will be glad that you did.
