Who Likes LARPing?

by David Borg

A variety of people, both men and women enjoy LARPing. LARP stands for Live Action Role Playing, and there are many different forms of this activity. It may be a strictly controlled gaming scenario, or just a casual gathering of historical reenactment enthusiasts. Either way, there are a number of people who enjoy these kinds of games.

Those who enjoy LARPing the most tend to be extremely imaginative and theatrical people. They generally enjoy the times of medieval days, and/or fantasy genre. Most people who enjoy LARPing often find it easy to spend time in these reenactments because they often share common interests.

What attracts a lot of people to role playing game is because it is a way to become someone else. It encourages the players interact and maybe forget some of their natural shyness. LARPing is proving to be a great venue for people to become bold and outspoken without “much” ridicule.

Usually when participating in a role play, you’ll find distinctively different types of players who play for different reasons. Some people view it as a competitive sport (the battle oriented role plays), others may simply view it as a fantasy game. Some players enjoy it as a medium to share a story, or act out history.

Other players enjoy LARPing that is based on the stories they enjoy reading, or other RPGs they played in the past. It is a good way to escape from the humdrum day-to-day life and become a part of the literature they’ve always liked.

LARPing is a great way to get involved with fantasy, mystery, or historical stories. People who have a passion for fictional stories can immerse themselves in fictional world so much that they can start to believe they belong there. It’s a lot like getting to know the characters of the story in a way that passive reading just can’t emulate.

In general terms, there are three types of LARPers: the dramatist, the gamer, and the immersionist. The dramatist enjoys acting out in any scene, the gamer gets the most from the battle scenes and solving puzzles, and the immersionist looks to maintain the authenticity and atmosphere of the characters and world background.

LARPing is a great way for player to enjoy playing out different roles in different settings. It’s a simple way to lose oneself in a character or story they really love.
